Record High Temperatures Burn Bulgaria's Danube Plain

The temperatures in six towns in Bulgaria's Danube plain reached Thursday their peak for over a century now, meteorologists reported.

The mercury in the town of Belene zoomed up to 41,2C and in Veliko Tarnovo - to 39,9C.

The heat wave overflowed also the Danube plain tows of Pleven, Lovech, Knezha and Vratsa, where the temperatures have not fallen below 37C.

Forecasters predicted highs of 42C in the forthcoming weekend. The heat is here to stay until the middle of the next week.

The only safe haven from the heat will be the beaches along the Black Sea coast, where temperatures will vary from 30C to 35C.

Amidst the summer sizzling heat and the increased risk of accidents, employers of construction workers secretly introduced a practice unusual for this part of Europe - the siesta. The working day starts from 6 am till 11 am and is renewed during the night in breach of local legislation.

Office workers however will hardly be given a more refreshing option to sitting at stuffy desks.
