Sweltering residents across Bulgaria are in for another day of sizzling heat as temperatures are expected to set new records on Wednesday.

Forecasters predicted highs of between 35-40C across the country, in the capital Sofia the mercury will zoom up to 35C.

The only safe haven from the heat will be the beaches along the Black Sea coast, where highs will vary from 30C to 35C.

The heat wave will be here to stay on Thursday and Friday and is expected to reach its peak over the weekend, when the mercury will climb up to 42C.

Amidst the summer sizzling heat and the increased risk of accidents, employers of construction workers secretly introduced a practice unusual for this part of Europe - the siesta. The working day starts from 6 am till 11 am and is renewed during the night in breach of local legislation.

Office workers however will hardly be given a more refreshing option to sitting at stuffy desks.
