Nearly fifty proud owners of Trabant cars gathered in downtown Sofia on Saturday to celebrate the 50th anniversary since the start of its manufacturing.

The event was organized with the cooperation of Germany's Embassy and under the patronage of former Foreign Minister Solomon Passy, the best-known Trabant owner in Bulgaria and definitely the most fervent advocate of its assets.

Passy's legendary trabant was at the centre of the event and justifiably was treated like a celebrity.

The famous trabant, in bygone times East Europe's best-known transporter, has given rides to five of NATO Secretary Generals over the years.

Manfred Woerner, was driven around the capital in June 1991-when the Bulgarian Parliament resolved to pursue NATO membership. Woerner's driver was Solomon Passy, the then chairman of the Atlantic Club of Bulgaria, a non-governmental organization formed in 1990 to lobby for NATO membership.

Years later in 2004, the year when Bulgaria joined NATO, Minister Passy gave a ride to NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.

The next year Passy gave way the car as a gift to the National Historic Museum.
