British Police Defuse Bomb in Downtown London

The London police defused a bomb on Friday in Haymarket in the central part of the city, after a tip off led them to a vehicle in a side street close to Piccadilly.

Police say that "a potentially viable explosive device was found at 2 am this morning", "The device was removed from the vehicle and made safe".

So far, no party have claimed responsibility for the device and police are keeping an open mind as to who may have planted the bomb.

"The placement of this vehicle was specifically designed to bring maximum carnage and death to innocent passers-by" said a police spokesman. "We are very fortunate that this device was found and made safe before the rush hour traffic was upon us"

Police are not confirming the type of device they have found was but it is believed that a remote control system may have been used to detonate the bomb.

The area is now cordoned off and Piccadilly tube will remain closed for most of the day. The Haymarket, Piccadilly Circus, Jermyn Street and some surrounding streets have been closed as Police probe the area looking for evidence.
