“The customs union is one of the most important chapters from the EU negotiations and that is why we support Bulgaria’s efforts to reform its customs,” Michael Leigh, EU Chief Negotiator with Bulgaria told Bulgaria’s bTV. According to him, the purpose of the contract with Crown Agents was to create efficient, modern and transparent customs in Bulgaria. Leigh explained that the EU officials have been reviewing the contract in order to see whether the conditions, under which it had been signed, were compatible with the EU standards.

Asked about the EU opinion on Bulgaria’s demand for fixed dates for EU entry, Leigh said that the EU entry date depended entirely on the reforms in the country. “The main issue for Bulgaria and the other applicant states is not only to adopt new laws but also to change the way the administration works,” Leigh said. The EU Chief Negotiator with Bulgaria also pointed out that Bulgaria should work against corruption and should reform the judicial system.

EU Chief Negotiator with Bulgaria Michael Leigh visited Bulgaria last week to attend Wilton Park Conference "Enlarging the European Union".
