European commissioner for external relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner said Thursday it is not clear if a deal on the AIDS case in Libya will be wrapped up soon.
"The EU is doing its best and I hope we are close to solving the problem and releasing he five Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian doctor on a death row in Libya," the commissioner explained.
The statement comes as a comment on the information, given by an official with the Qaddafi humanitarian foundation, headed by the son of Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi that an out-of-court settlement could be reached as early as Friday.
"A statement on a deal between the families of the children suffering from AIDS and the European Union will be announced on Friday," said the official.
The move would have followed a visit to Libya last week of two European diplomats, and their deal is independent of the final appeal launched on Wednesday.
