CHILDREN- MEANING OF LIFE FOR 67% OF BULGARIANS

Children are the meaning of life for 66.5 percent of the Bulgarians, 11.5 percent raise children for the sheer joy of watching them grow, 7.9 percent expect their children to care for them in their old age, 3.7 percent say they have children because they are expected to, 4.3 percent hope to strengthen their marriage, and 5.3 percent give no particular reason, Dr Antonia Grigorova, Executive Director of "9 Mesetsa" (9 Months) magazine announced in connection with the Baby 2003 Fourth National Campaign.

Economic circumstances make 23.3 percent of Bulgarians to put off or decide against having their first child, or their second child (46.4 percent), or their third (31.3 percent).

A family with two children is the model preferred by 63 percent of Bulgarians and 54 percent of the Roma population.

28 percent of Bulgarians chose to have one child;19.9 percent of Turks, and 11.5 percent of the Roma.

A family with many children is the preferred model for 12.8 percent of Bulgarians, 15.9 percent of Turks and 32.6 percent of the
Roma.
