EC Mulls Sanctions for Bulgaria over Corruption, Poor Government - Report

The European Commission mulls releasing a recommendation for cutting off part of the funding for Bulgaria over corruption and poor government, Darik News reported, citing an anonymous high-ranking EC official.

The unnamed person made the surprising statement in an interview for Reuters, according to Darik News.

According to the anonymous official, Bulgaria might be imposed sanctions after the next monitoring report of the European Commission due to be released on June 27. Romania, which joined the European Union together with Bulgaria on January 1, is not threatened by sanctions, he said.

There was a risk of sanctions for the 10 new EU member states that joined the block in 2004, but they were never imposed.
