Shimon Peres Elected Israel's New President

The elder statesman Shimon Peres was elected Israel's ninth president on Wednesday after winning the support of 86 MPs at the second vote.

Peres, who is representative of the ruling Kadima Party, was elected after his opponents Reuven Rivlin of the hawkish Likud and Colette Avital of the centrist Labor withdrew their candidatures.

The victory of Peres comes after his second attempt at taking the post.

The new president, an 83-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner who has hold all of Israel's top civilian posts, is to be sworn into office on July 15, for a seven-year term.
