The US first lady Laura Bush and the spouse of Bulgaria's president Zorka Parvanova opened a new kids' reading-room in Sofia's Central Library on Monday.

Mrs. Bush endowed hundreds of books, describing the US history to found the first such a corner in the Balkans.

There are also unique guides of National Geographic magazine in the new spot and it has been equipped with six personal computers.

The US first lady explained there could be found books, related to Bulgaria's history and culture in some libraries in the states of Colorado and Maryland.

"Bulgaria is one of those countries, which help raising the literacy among the world's population," Mrs. Bush said at the opening ceremony.

The event was held in the framework of the two first ladies' separate agenda, which is part of the US President George Bush and his spouse's two-day official visit to Bulgaria.
