Taliban Military Commander: Osama bin Laden "Alive and Kicking"

Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is alive and is still issuing instructions to his commanders in the field, the brother and successor of dead Taliban commander Haji Mullah Dadullah said.

He made his statement in a television interview on Tuesday, saying he had received a letter from Osama bin Laden expressing condolences for his brother's death.

Dadullah told Arab satellite channel Al-Jazeera that bin Laden sent him a letter after his brother, Mullah Dadullah, the former top Taliban field commander, was killed in southern Afghanistan last month.

The al-Qaeda leader "is active and in good health, and he continues to carry out his duties,'" Dadullah said in comments translated by the Doha, Qatar-based news channel.

"He preferred to stay away, and we preferred that, because he should stay in hiding and give instructions," he added.

Dadullah succeeded his late brother as military commander of the Taliban. His brother, Mullah Dadullah, was killed in a US-led military operation in Afghanistan last month.
