Former US State Dept Official Touted for World Bank Top Job - Report

World | May 29, 2007, Tuesday // 00:00

Former US deputy secretary of state Robert Zoellick is the frontrunner to take over from Paul Wolfowitz as president of the World Bank, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

The US traditionally appoints the lender's president and will do so again, despite calls for an open process after the scandal involving Wolfowitz.

Wolfowitz, a close ally of US President George W. Bush and one of the key architects of the Iraq war, will step down at the end of June halfway through his term, following outrage caused by his decision to arrange a better-paid job for his partner.

Zoellick, 53, who has also served as US trade representative under Bush, has played a leading role in efforts to revive the Doha trade round and has widespread experience of and high-level contacts with Europe, China, Latin America and Africa, the FT said.

He has also worked in different positions in the US treasury department in the 1980s.

Current US deputy treasury secretary Robert Kimmitt is another name reported as a possible successor to Wolfowitz.
