The newly appointed mayor of the UK's university city of Cambridge Jenny Bailey is a transsexual and so is her partner.
Bailey, 45, and her partner Jennifer Liddle, 49, were both born male and underwent gender reassignment surgeries in their 30s.
The new mayor has two sons with her ex-wife, who remains a friend.
Bailey has previously served as deputy mayor and the mayoress Liddle is a former council member.
According to the Local Government Association, Bailey is the first transsexual to serve as a mayor in Britain.
"This is fantastic," Bailey said after being installed.
"All we, the transsexual, want is to become normal as we are happy when we just cope with the everyday problems. The new post gave me these opportunities," Bailey added.
