The question "what kind of European Parliament?" may sound just as controversial as the "what kind of Europe?" after the arrival of an extremely controversial Bulgarian businessman. Slavi Binev, a former owner of a popular nightclub for pop folk music, a taekwondo champion and an archon, is already packing up his bags for Brussels and Strasbourg.

I know from personal experience that nightlife in these cities may be more than exciting. Yet I can't help thinking that the spirit of entrepreneurship will take the upper hand over the religious pieties in this ambitious nationalist to open the eyes of westerners to what real entertainment is about. The Balkan way.

So much for what has described the European Parliament so far - a body built by elites, those well-informed officials, who speak in the obscure and boring manner typical of EU insiders.

Last month when asked whether he considers running for an MEP, Binev said: " I want to be the man whom I am and be remembered no matter the cost!"

And remembered he will be. In his pre-election period for being blessed with the non-existent in this part of the world title of an archon and his shady dealings, and in his post-election period - for breaking out of Brussels grim paradigm and confirming the view that traditional ways of looking at the EU are becoming outmoded.

That must be the reason why Binev, together with the other nine men and eight women, who were elected MEPs last week forgot the vote was to pick up Bulgaria's representatives in Europe rather than settle scores on the political domestic scene.

A EU progress report on June 27 will certainly wake them up to reality.
