Romania's EU Commissioner Leonard Orban, in charge of multilingualism has taken a serious engagement to promote the Bulgarian language and the Cyrillic alphabet in the EU, he himself announced Thursday.

Five months after Bulgaria joined the EU, the Bulgarian language has an even better position in the EU than the languages of the other member states, Orban said after his meeting with the country's EU Affairs Minister Gergana Grancharova.

Bulgaria will support Commissioner Orban's initiative and efforts to reduce and weaken the language barriers, Minister Grancharova said.

Orban, arrived on a one-day visit to Bulgaria on May 24, the day of the Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slav Letters.

Commissioner Orban joined the solemn festivities in Sofia and conferred with Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev.

He is also met Education Minister Daniel Vulchev and Sofia mayor Boyko Borisov.
