Bulgaria has taken a historical step by adding the Cyrillic alphabet to the family of the EU languages, Romania's EU Commissioner Leonard Orban, in charge of multilingualism said on Thursday.

He was invited as a honourable guest to the celebrations of May 24, the day of the Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slav Letters.

The Cyrillic alphabet and the Bulgarian language will contribute to the cultural diversity of the European union, Orban said and added that this particular fact makes the Bulgarian language unique.

Later in the day he met the country's Culture Minister Stefan Danailov. The two discussed the EU policies for protection the common European cultural heritage, the language and cultural variety and the saving of the national identity.
