Voter turnout in Bulgaria's first European elections stood at 28,69 % on average, data from the Central Electoral Commission shows.

Voter turnout hit the highest levels in the towns of Silistra (48.01 %), Razgrad (45,06%), Kardzhali (44,61%), Turgovishte (44.31 %) and Shumen (41%), all regions, densely populated with ethnic Turks.

Voters in the 25th electoral region in the capital Sofia proved to be the least enthusiastic about casting a ballot in the MEP vote with turnout going just a notch over 18%.

Bulgarian voters residing outside the country ignored the country's first election for the European Parliament on Sunday - only 3,759 Bulgarians cast their ballots in the 35 polling stations opened abroad by 7 p.m. Sofia time, when the voting ended.
