The preferential vote, introduced for the first time in the country is the best thing that could happen to Bulgaria and this is an indication for a well functioning democracy, leader of the Union of Democratic Forces said after casting his ballot.

It will be inexplicable if the Bulgarians do not go to the polling stations in the country's first ever MEP vote, UDF leader Petar Stoyanov added.

"Bulgarians keep their strong belief in the EU as opposed to many other east Europeans. In fact in the past 17 years we were constantly aspired after the idea of the EU," Stoyanov believes.

His UDF party was once the biggest centre-right party is first on the party's MEP list. Its campaign focused on lower European taxes, free access for Bulgarians to EU labour markets and support for Western Balkan countries' bids to join the EU.
