Bulgarian Village Boycotts MEP Elections over Potholed Main Road

Politics » BULGARIA IN EU | May 20, 2007, Sunday // 00:00

The citizens of Bulgaria's west northern village of Drashan boycotted the first-ever MEP vote in the country, because of the potholed and dilapidated main road that passes through the village.

The Drashan citizens said they will cast their ballots only when the mayor shows them the bank certificate for the money allocated by the state authorities for the road repair.

According to local sources, a woman, who called herself Olga, called in the local election commission and said the citizens will not enter the polling stations unless the mayor assured them the road will be repaired as soon as possible.
