Sofia citizens found themselves extremely surprised on Thursday night and throughout the whole Friday when after weeks of hot weather and droughts, torrential rains and violent thunderstorms hit the capital.

The meteorologists said more precipitations are expected in the next few days.

Because of the rains, the district around Sofia's Iskar train station is flooded because it is situated at city's lowest part. Another problem are the non-operating traffic lights at several key crossings. Luckily there were only a few light car accidents and no people were injured. Usually after the first rain drops a car crash occurs every three minutes.

In the past 50 days the precipitations around Bulgaria did not even reach 50% of the expected for the season.
