Silly Season

The football season is over and a long three months of, well, no football, are looming ahead. Without an international tournament this summer, the most exciting football action fans can expect is a sleuth of transfer rumours.

The football rumour mill rarely stops even during the season, but in summer it has a tendency to go into overdrive as papers, TV and radio will repeat any gossip, no matter how ludicrous, just to fill their pages/airtime.

In England the silly season has already started, despite an FA Cup final and several promotion play-offs still to be played over the next week and a half.

And, invariably, a big chunk of these news is making it back to Bulgaria as well, since it has to do with Dimitar Berbatov, by far the country's best football player at this time.

Now, don't get me wrong, I think Berbo is a very good player and could be pushing for world-class status within a couple of years.

But frankly, I am a bit fed up with all the Bulgarian media fawning over his every move - will he stay at Tottenham, will he move elsewhere, for how much?

I refuse to believe that his future is the only sports topic worth discussing.

What about Bulgaria's crucial European qualifying games two weeks from now, or the Bulgarian premier league, where the title fight is closer and more twisted than ever in recent years, the plight of other Bulgarian footballers?

And that's football alone, which by far is not the only sport in existence.

So can we please tone it down with the whole Berbatov furore?

PS: of course, if Berbo decides to switch clubs and move to Liverpool, disregard all of the above. Football fans really are fickle.
