Mladen Mihalev, better known, as so many of Bulgaria's crime bosses are, by his nickname - "Madzho", was offered on Wednesday the kind of treatment that only heads of state receive.
After months of searching, he finally appeared in court where he was due to appear as a witness in the investigation into the murder of one his close associates, Milcho Bonev aka Bai Mile.
He was fashionably late - only three hours - and blamed Sofia traffic for the delay.
Indeed, how dare the magistrates and police fail to close the streets through which one of the members of Bulgarian underworld's true royalty will pass.
They might have as well. They did after all go to the trouble to totally blockade two of the capital's busiest streets, trams and all, for his coming and going.
They even gave him enough police escorts to make him feel better - the dozen bodyguards that shadowed his every move, including in the courtroom, were clearly not enough.
And the reporter that dared approach the "employees only" entrance to the court house got his just rewards for daring to stray from the pre-approved scenario - a savage beating from cops.
You know, the same ones whose job is said to be to enforce the law. Makes you wonder whom they "serve and protect."
