Dozens Bulgarians joined the UN-sponsored initiative Fight Hunger, designed to fight starvation globally on Sunday for a fifth year in a row.

The walk-on-foot charity event "Walk The World" was organized by the UN World Food Program (WFP) and its partners TNT and Unilever, global provider of express, logistics and mail service. Some BGN 1,500 were raised to be transferred to the WFP bank account to fight hunger.

Bulgaria gathered over EUR 800 from the campaign, which will go to a UN program providing children with healthy meals in their schools.

The walk, which went along the foothills of the Vitosha mountain, was lead by the Bulgarian top alpinist Doychin Vassilev. TNT and Unilever employees, their friends and families walked several kilometres in support of the campaign

The first "Walk the World" event held last year in 72 countries and raised money enough to fund meals for over 30,000 school children in the developing world.

"The campaign Fight Hunger: Walk the World is about creating a movement to end child hunger," said Arlene Mitchell, Director of Walk the World for WFP. "By engaging citizens from rich and poor countries alike, governments worldwide will heed the call, and will do more to end child hunger. Without citizen action, the status quo will remain. But with it, we can help to end the unnecessary suffering of children."
