Energy Minister Rumen Ovcharov is embattled, yet unrepentant. He has gleefully taken on his critics with a promise to be back, presumably victorious, on May 21. It was more than wise of him, however, not to rule out the alternative.

Ovcharov is a clever man. We could see that when he said the Bulgarian state was falling apart. We can see it now when he admits he may need to extend his leave after the vote for European parliamentarians on May 20.

It was namely the corruption scandal that made the elections political, cheered up the opposition and boosted its fantasies of landing more MEP seats than originally planned.

In their dreams the opposition picture the MEP vote as nothing but a punishing vote for the three-party government, a nemesis for BTC sale (and re-sale), for the interference of the judiciary in Bulgartabac privatisation and for the recent mega corruption scandal.

After a defeat in the local elections, the government will be too shaken to stand on its feet, they say.

What the opposition did not get right is that the elections will not spell the end of the government. And hopefully of the scandal, involving Energy Minister Ovcharov. Because of Brussels' interest we do have a reason to hope that the scandal will not follow the all too Bulgarian tradition of sweeping everything stinking under the carpet.

Otherwise it will not be the opposition, but the corrupt and the criminal who will benefit the most from the flap.
