This Paralysis

Sofia's public transport drivers announced Monday they will start a strike on May 15 because they demand higher salaries. The bad news is that the strike will continue until the drivers don't get what they want.

This by no means will bring my lovely city to a deadlock. No transport, no life is what is going to happen. I remember when I was still in high school when the same thing happened, but luckily this time it is not in the middle of a Siberian winter, but amidst springtime. And this spring paralysis needs no analysis. No payment, the drivers said, no transport for Sofia's citizens.

At some point I do agree with them. A person who gets up at 3 am, must me ultra cautious throughout his shift as hi transports people and transports them in worn out vehicles needs to be paid a whole lot more money than the puny salary offered.

But on the other hand this strike will be a knock out punch for all who use the public transport to get to work, school or wherever. Of course the strikers promised the transport will not stop, but the number of busses, trams and trolley busses will be decreased to 250, which for a city of nearly 2 million people means going to hell before even dying.

This situation will certainly bring us back many a year in the past, when transport was not that developed and people from one village visited the other only on special occasions. But since from sever years now we have been living in the 21st century this sounds beyond the verge of absurd.

So I beg for the ones responsible for rising drivers' salaries to do so as fast as possible because the capital will suffer a heavy overall paralysis. And since all Bulgarians know how to live with their hands on the throat of the government, none of us Sofia citizens knows how to live without public transport.
