Furious opponents of the newly elected French President Nicolas Sarkozy staged a riot in the centre of Paris on Sunday evening.

The police scattered the crowd of more than 1,000 demonstrators using tear gas.

Crashes between the police and demonstrators took place also in Lille, Lyon, Nant and several other big cities in the country.

Dozens of cars were set on fire in the Paris' suburbs.

There were thrown explosives in the yards of many kindergartens and schools in the same areas.

The leader of the Socialist party and partner of the Segolene Royal, who failed to win the presidential run-offs, called on the left-wing supporters to keep calm.
