Bulgaria: Better Late Than Never Photo by Nadya Kotseva (Sofia Photo Agency)

Better late than never - it seem that phrase comprises the eternal philosophy of the Bulgarian people. Relying on the fact that they could do their most important duties later, Bulgarians always put off even some vital activities.

What is really scary, however, is that the men in power have also embraced this idea. The recent crisis over the large-scale money draining scandal proves this statement of mine.

The prime minister finally decided to wave his firm hand and to chase several subordinates away as they are allegedly involved in the scandal. But did he make this step because of a real concern about the future of the whole nation or only due to the fear of exposure, which could cut the ground from under his government? Is it possible that the premier has just washed his hands of the case?

The chief prosecutor for his part announced Bulgaria will call on the European Union for help and supervising once again. As usual, we rely on somebody else, as it is easier to just observe while he is doing our work for us. This time, however, I truly doubt such an approach would bring it to an end. Our fish has already begun to stink at the head and the only way out is to chop it off.
