The centre-rightist candidate Sarkozy gathered between 53% and 56% of the votes in France's presidential run-offs on Sunday, leaving his socialist opponent Royal behind with up to 47%, the French language Belgium newspaper Soir" reported.

The media based its prognoses on inquiries, which have been filled in by the voters across France after they cast their ballots.

There was registered a record high voter turnout for decades now, France Presse announced. It reached the striking 75,11% at 5 p.m. local time.
