Turkey's Presidential Elections Fail over Sole Runner's Withdrawing

World | May 6, 2007, Sunday // 00:00

The presidential elections in Turkey failed after the sole runner withdrew his candidature.

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul was not elected in an abortive ballot re-run in parliament on Sunday, when the session could not open for lack of a quorum.

The parliament's Speaker Bulent Arinc closed the session, saying the necessary 357 votes have not been cast, which made the voting invalid.

Last week, Turkey's Constitutional Court has annulled the initial vote exactly due to the quorum's lack.
