Bulgaria: Bai Ganyo Ghost Revived Photo by Yuliana Nikolova (Sofia Photo Agency)

November 2005. A French businessman asks me what I think of Energy Minister Rumen Ovcharov. I prefer to keep silent, the new government fresh in office. August 2006. Ovcharov comes under fire by his own men, the peak of a flood of accusations over his alleged involvement in corruption schemes. The Frenchman will never ask me of my opinion again, I think. May 2007. Hell breaks loose. Resignation is the only thing that may settle the dust in a party and state discredited by large-scale state funds draining and corruption scandals, I think.

Yet Ovcharov confirms what we have known all along - he is a tough and obstinate man. He claims that his resignation would only revive the ghost of Bai Ganyo, telling Bulgarians that "everybody is a scoundrel". What he forgets is exactly that the author of the famous saying from the last century's novel of Aleko Konstantinov is Bai Ganyo - the national anti-hero, the hopeless barbarian.

What Bulgarians know how to do and have the right to do is tell the good from the bad. Ovcharov had better submit his resignation and submit it fast. If he holds his party close to his heart and has an instinct of self-preservation.
