Segolene Royal, the Socialist contender in France's presidential run-off, has warned of violence sweeping the country if rivalling right-winger Nicolas Sarkozy wins the elections.

"I think that choosing Nicolas Sarkozy would be a dangerous choice. I do not want France to shift towards a system of brutality," Royal told RTL radio on Friday, the final day of campaigning ahead of Sunday's vote.

Reporters commented that Royal's accusations come just as opinion polls show Sarkozy is increasing his lead.

Nicolas Sarkozy claimed 31.2 % and Segolene Royal - 25.9 % of the votes in the first round of the presidential elections on April 22.

The two candidates will meet in the run-off on May 6 to set up a classic right versus left fight.

Nicolas Sarkozy, the former finance and interior minister, campaigned on a platform that focuses on reforming the floundering French social model, cutting taxes and pushing free-market reforms.

Segolene Royal, offered to reverse some of the reforms passed during Jacques Chirac's two terms in office, as well as raise the minimum wage.
