World | May 3, 2007, Thursday // 00:00

The crimes committed against reporters all around the world and the journalists' security will be one of the main topics to be discussed at a Thursday conference in Columbia, which will mark the World Media Freedom Day 2007.

The conference has been organized by UNESCO and the international non-governmental body Reporters Without Borders.

According to data collected by the organization, 75 journalists and 35 media workers were killed across the world in 2006 and more than 500 - in the last 10 years. In most of the cases the victims lost their lives while performing their duties.

The independent, New York-based organization Committee to Protect Journalists claim that about 85% of the reporters' killers in the last 15 years were either not found or released.

All the threads the journalists face nowadays make the job more dangerous than ever.
