Sofia Residents Returning from Vacation Block Major Motorway

Residents of the Bulgarian capital taking advantage of the four-day break to vacation outside the city have blocked one of the country's major motorways late on Tuesday.

A line several kilometres long was reported at the entrance of the Vitinya tunnel on the Trakiya motorway, which links the capital to the Black Sea port of Varna.

A stretch of the motorway in the direction of Varna is currently being repaired and all traffic to and from Sofia has to squeeze into the three lanes in the other direction.

In order to speed up proceedings and remove any delays, traffic police are rerouting all trucks to a road that runs parallel to the motorway.

The road between Sofia and Varna, only partially covered by the incomplete Trakiya motorway, is one of Bulgaria's busiest, since it runs through the entire northern part of the country.

Traffic on the Hemus motorway linking Sofia to Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second biggest city, is also above average, but since it passes through plain terrain, there are no delays there.

With May 1, the International Labour Day, which is a national holiday in Bulgaria, falling on Tuesday, all government institutions and the overwhelming majority of private companies worked on Saturday the previous week to make up for April 30 and give their employees a four-day weekend.
