Quake Rattles Southern England

A moderate earthquake shook parts of southeast England Saturday morning, causing damages but no casualties.

The US Geological Survey said the 4.7-magnitude quake struck at 8:18 a.m. (0718 GMT) near Ashford, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) southeast of London.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre put the quake's magnitude at 5.

British media reports spoke of thousands of homes left without power, many residents evacuated, wandering the streets, too frightened to return to their homes.
