More than 97% of the Bulgarians support a full or partial ban on smoking at public places, an inquiry, conducted by the EU shows.

The campaign for establishing the citizens' attitude toward the harmful activity was organized by the EU Health Commissioner Markos Kiprianou and continued until April 15.

A total of 368 individuals, families and even whole companies' members gave their opinion in letters, sent to Bulgaria's Health Ministry.

Bulgarians, who live in the US, France, UK, Spain and other countries were among the respondents as well.

About 5% of the respondents are ex-smokers and almost 7% still belong to the group of the smokers.

Most of the smokers, quite logically, declared against the ban, as it would restrict their personal freedom.

The respondents were at one with the opinion that the society should know more about the passive and active smoking and the harm it causes to the people. They all, however, think this process will take a long time.
