Voting Machines Cause Delays in French Presidential Elections

World | April 22, 2007, Sunday // 00:00

The voting machines introduced for the first time in France at Sunday's presidential elections have caused massive delays as voters struggled to cope with the new technology.

Long queues were reported in numerous locations where the machines were installed to replace the traditional voting booths, French media reported.

Close to 1,5 million voters were expected to cast their votes using the machines, out of a total 44,5 million eligible voters.

Councillor Daniel Guerin, from Villeneuve-le-Roi, went as far as to lodge a complaint against voting machines with the country's Constitutional Court, asking it to look into the problems caused by their use, Le Monde reported.

He claimed it took between 45 minutes and an hour and a half for some voters to cast their ballots, and some gave up after repeated attempts.
