For the first time Jurassic fossils were found in the rocks in the vicinity of the Bulgarian base, it became clear after the tenth Bulgarian Antarctic expedition came to an end. The members of the expedition conducted research in glaciology, meteorology, geophysics, geology, geochemistry, mineralogy, hydrogeology, zoology, botany and ecology under projects, which are part of a long-term research programme adopted in 1995. The Bulgarian researchers explored man's influence on the unique nature in the region under a project financed by the Environment and Water Ministry The construction of the first Eastern Orthodox Christian chapel on the continent will begin next Antarctic season, on a site, which was blessed during the expedition. A blessing ceremony was conducted at the site. Bulgaria joined the Antarctic countries in 1978. The first Bulgarian expedition was in the spring of 1988.
