The president of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Poettering called for the release of the five nurses sentenced to death in Libya from the Parliament tribune in Sofia.

"We the 27 EU member countries together and clearly stated our support of the nurses, we denounced the death sentence and asked for the women's release," Poettering said. "Now from the tribune of free and democratic Bulgaria I want to call for their release once again."

Later on in the second day of his visit to Bulgaria Hans-Gert Poettering conferred with President Georgi Parvanov.
