Romanian MPs are to give their votes for or against President Traian Basescu's dismissal on Thursday.
If the Parliament decides to dismiss the head of state, a referendum will be launched in a period of 30 days after the vote.
Should the citizens support Basescu, he could remain on his post. Otherwise, pro-term presidential elections would be held.
President Basescu announced he will resign if the MPs vote for his removal from the post as if he gains the Romanians' confidence that would openly oppose him to the government.
The present situation is a result of the continuing political crisis in the country due to the conflict between the president and the Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, which reached its climax after Romania's EU accession.
In the beginning of April, Tariceanu has even dismissed all the ministers in his cabinet, who were from the close to the president Democratic Party.
