Virginia governor Tim Kaine declared a state of emergency after Monday's shootings at the Virginia Tech, deploying state personnel, equipment and other resources to the university's campus to help out in the aftermath of the disaster, Fox News reported.

The death toll from twin shooting in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech reached 33, including the gunman,

Virginia State Police and the local law enforcement in Blacksburg, Virginia, are investigating the shootings, while the state's chief medical examiner has also been dispatched to help with fatalities, the governor's office said.

Kaine has ordered the lowering of the Virginia state flag in honor of those who were killed or injured in the shootings.

On its website, the university reported the shootings were at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus at West Ambler Johnston, a co-ed residence hall that houses 895 people.

It also said there were "multiple victims" at Norris Hall, one of the buildings of the engineering department.

Bulgarian authorities are now checking to find whether any of the Bulgarian students at Virginia Tech was among the victims of the shootings.
