US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson voiced the support of the White House for World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz, who is facing calls to resign after admitting he helped his girlfriend land a high-paying job.

"He's apologized, the bank has a process in place to review this, and Paul has said this process is appropriate, and I agree with him," Paulson said in response to questions at a briefing.

"Given that we have a representative on the board involved in that process I don't think it's appropriate for me to comment any further, but let me add, though, that this should not call into question or be read as any lessening of U.S. support for Paul Wolfowitz," he added.

Wolfowitz's girlfriend, Libyan-born Shaha Riza, was moved to the state department on secondment when he took the World Bank's top job in 2005, but her salary was still paid by the Bank.

Wolfowitz apologized for what he called a mistake, but failed to ease concerns among the staff of the bank.
