Eight people, including two Iraqi MPs, were killed and another 20 wounded in a suicide attack in Iraq's parliament suicide bombing on Thursday, CNN reported, citing US and Iraqi officials.
MP Mohammed Hassan Awad from the National Dialogue bloc (a Sunni group not part of the government) was identified as one of the killed.
The cafeteria is reserved for MPs and their staff and the explosion happened during lunchtime. The parliament building is located inside Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone and it is unclear how the bomber was able to pass through the multiple security checkpoints.
Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki called the bombing a "criminal and cowardly act," in a statement read on state television. "This savage act will not weaken the will of the representatives of the Iraqi people," al-Maliki said.
