Slavi Binev, a controversial figure in Bulgaria's restaurateur business who recently dropped a bomb by getting blessed as an archon, will run for MEP on the nationalists ticket.

Polls show Binev, owner of nightclubs in the capital, enjoys a big chance to make his way to the European Parliament, featuring as high as the third spot on the ticket of Ataka party.

The nationalists' ticket will be led by scandalous MEP and stepson of Ataka leader Dimitar Stoyanov, followed by no other than his girlfriend Denitsa Gadzheva.

Slavi Binev was blessed as an archon at Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica in Rome on January 3, sparking tension between Sofia and the Vatican.

Experts in ecclesiastical matters said the title of archon does not exist at all in the traditions and structures of the Bulgarian Orthodox church.

Slavi Binev, however, thought otherwise. According to the information, published at his site, the title was conferred in recognition of his contribution to the church and humankind. It is hereditary and corresponds to the Catholic title of duke, he says.

Slavi Binev is a key figure in Bulgaria's restaurateur business and owner of a popular Sofia nightclub. He shot to stardom after taking to court Georgi Iliev, an alleged underworld boss, who was murdered in August 2005.
