A plane of private Turkish Pegasus Airlines has been hijacked Tuesday during a flight from Diarbekir in south eastern part of the country to the most populous city of Istanbul.

The pilot was forced to land the machine in the capital city of Ankara, after the hijacker, Mehmed Goksin Gol, was arrested.

Police are now questioning him to find out his motives for holding the 178 passengers and crew hostage. He claimed to have an explosive on board and first wanted the plane to land in Ankara. Gol then chnaged his mind and said he wanted to fly to Iran.

He didn't make any political demands.

Police say he had a long criminal record.
