Of Nurses and Freedom

Disillusioned after years of empty hopes and pompous words, the relatives of the five jailed Bulgarian nurses in Libya set up an association to save them. And for the first time in years they asked some questions that none of the politicians, celebrities and human rights fighters had thought to ask.

One of those questions is who will finally take care of the parents of those five women. Those parents, who live in the utmost misery, forgotten by all, even by the people who present themselves as their children's biggest supporters for this or that PR stunt.

The politicians have disappointed us, the relatives say again and again, and have even asked some famous Bulgarians to help them make sure no one is going to use that association for their own interests. I don't know what's sadder - that they need someone to protect them from their representatives in Parliament, or that they saw the need to set up such an organization in the first place.

In the past years our politicians have showed their impotence on this matter over and over again and now someone has done what they should have a long time ago. My suggestion goes to all the MPs, ministers and lobbyists who had a say in the reign of three governments that didn't manage to get the nurses out of jail. Take what you earn in a day and donate it to that association. But do it selflessly, anonymously, without drumming it all over the place. If you do that you probably would have done more in this one act than what has been done in these 8 years.
