Two French tourists are missing after 1,600 passengers and crew were evacuated from a Cypriot cruise ship that sank off the Greek island of Santorini.

A 45-year-old man and his daughter were reported missing by family members also on the cruise, officials said.

"The missing are Jean-Christophe Allain, 45 and his 16-year-old daughter Maud," a merchant marine ministry official told AFP news agency.

The Sea Diamond, owned by Cypriot cruise liner and hotel operator Louis Plc, started to list after hitting a rock as it attempted to enter the port of Santorini.

Greek air force and navy helicopters, two cruise ships, a ferry and local craft from Santorini assisted in the successful and orderly evacuation of the passengers from the Sea Diamond, the Merchant Marine Ministry said in an e-mailed statement late yesterday.

Most of the passengers, mainly U.S. tourists, were then transferred by ship to the Greek mainland port of Piraeus, private Greek television channel Skai reported.
