A total of 1500 Bulgarians with some kind of drug addiction are included in methadone programs, head of the Bulgarian Methadone Association Alexander Kanchelov announced Thursday.

Those 1500 people are less than a fifth of the ones who need to be treated with methadone, he said and added there are around 30,000 drug addicts in the country. At least 10, 000 of them need to undergo the methadone program.

Data of the European Association of Addiction Therapy shows that around 80% of the drug addicts included in methadone programs stay for a treatment for at least an year, which is considered to be the critical period.
