The Urvich Fortress, which is close to Sofia, will be renovated in a three-year period and to become a tourist destination, it became clear at a press conference on Thursday.

The excavations will start soon and will be led by Doctor Bonny Perunova and Professor Nikolay Ovharov. Retired military officers have already declared their will to help with the work.

The renovation program of the fortress includes full clearing of the area, making alleys for walks and all kinds of geodesy research. The scientists hope to find also secret passages underneath.

The opening of the renovated medieval fortress must coincide with the 1200th anniversary of Serdika's incorporation with the medieval state of Bulgaria.

The Urvich Fortress is the second largest one in the surroundings of Sofia and is situated just some 15 kilometres away from the city. It is supposed that the treasures and the secret library of Tzar Ivan Shishman are hidden somewhere in the fortress.

The historical information (construction of the walls, other remains) shows that the fortress was built during the XIII century in the time of the Second Bulgarian Empire. There are two versions regarding the origin of the name. According to the first one, the fortress was named after the name of the local boyar - Urvich. The other one says, that the name follows the situation - from "urva" (meaning precipice in Bulgarian).

The first records about the fortress are given by Paisii Hilendarski in his "History". Emphasized is the role that Urvich played in the defence of the Second Bulgarian Empire. A legend says that in this location were the last battles of Tzar Ivan Shishman.

According to the legends thanks to the fact, that it is surrounded from three sides by the Iskar River, the fortress withstood the last siege for a long time, until the day when a local woman, named Vedena in an attempt to save her child's life, revealed the location of the secret entrance of Urvich. The people damned the betrayer and she petrified. Today if the traveller looks towards the left bank of Vedena river, they will see a rock shape, which looks like a figure of a woman hugging a kid. This rock structure is named "Starchikov kamak".
