Thousands Protest against Ukrainian Parliament's Dissolution

About 2,000 Ukrainians staged a Thursday protest against the President Viktor Yushchenko's decree for the Parliament's dissolution, issued earlier this week.

"We expect that the state's head will recall his decree and we will stay here until the Constitutional Court announce its final decision," the protestors said.

The citizens declared that if pro-term MP elections are enacted, they will demand such for the presidential post as well.

The Yushchenko's decree came into force on Tuesday morning after it was promulgated in the Ukrainian state gazette "Official newspaper".

As a result, the MPs approached the Constitutional Court to judge whether it is in compliance with the constitution.

They even adopted a law, stating that they didn't have to comply with the President. The newly-hatched bill obliges MPs to only follow the will of the Parliament.

Should the President manage to get the upper hand, elections will have to be held in the country, and Yushchenko has already set the date at May 27.
