The European Parliament has been built by elites. But 2007 could be EP's year of Bulgaria's people. Or rather it could have been. A new plan for the release of six death-sentenced Bulgarians, hatched after eight painful years of fruitless efforts to save them from Qaddafi's clutches, was recently proposed and put to the test. The collision between an elite project, political interests and human tragedy however proved too bruising for the plan to pull through.

What it successfully did was draw battle lines and split in an unprecedented way journalists and politicians. Proponents say it is a wonderful idea, which will grab the attention of the world in the most expressive way imaginable. Opponents - first in Sofia and then in Brussels - claim there is no realistic scenario for the plan to work out and even if it did, that could give a powerful advantage to Qaddafi.

Suddenly the six medics, whom the whole world admits to be held hostages in Libya, turned into hostages of the European Parliament idea at its very conception. Because they had accepted the idea the moment they heard about it. Not even pausing for a moment to think that none of the big parties will be willing to relinquish six MEP seats. Not even pausing for a moment to think that those who did relinquish their grip on the ticket would not find the time to learn the medics' names ...

What I have been thinking is that when a man is desperate and out of hope, everything is worth trying. Especially when the move - whether it is brought to fruition or not - is that symbolic.
